Carl Long, born November 16, 1931 in Jackson, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2022, surrounded by his loving family at Baptist Hospital Collierville, at the age of 91.

He graduated from North Side High School in 1950 and went on to attend Union University on a football scholarship.  In 1954, he enlisted in the Army where he served 16 months in Korea.  After the war Carl returned to Union University, completing his bachelor’s degree in 1957, later finishing his master’s degree in education at Memphis State University. Carl’s first coaching/teaching position was at Central High School in Bolivar, TN, where he coached girls’ basketball and was an assistant football coach. He then went to Tigrett Jr. High School in Jackson, where he once again coached girls’ basketball and was an assistant football coach.  After his years at Tigrett, Carl had the opportunity to return to his alma mater, North Side High School, where he taught science and physical education and was also an assistant football coach and girls’ basketball coach. He loved students of all ages and began his first position as Principal at Nova Elementary School, where he served for 13 years. After Nova, he served as Principal of the Vocational High School in Jackson, then returned to North Side where he retired in 1993.

Carl and Joyce (the love of his life) were married July 16, 1953, and recently celebrated their 69th anniversary. They joined Englewood Baptist Church in 1960, where Carl served as a teacher and deacon emeritus. In addition to his service at church, Carl was active with Senior Olympics and sports officiating.

Carl is survived by his wife, Joyce Dismuke Long of 69 years; sons, Rick Long (Wendy) of Franklin, TN and Philip Long (Ammie) of Marion, NC; daughter, Carla Long Little (Ronnie) of Collierville, TN; sister-in-law, Sue Dismuke Henson of Jackson, TN; grandchildren, Brian Long (Christine), Lindsey Long, Bethany Little Adamski (David), Brad Little (Katie), Jonathan Little, Mary Catherine Long Fulmer (Philip), Molly Long Griffin (Matt), and Emily Long Prewitt (Justin); 6 precious great-grandchildren, Alayna Adamski, Abigail Adamski, Carter Long, Clara Little, Audrey Adamski, and Hank Fulmer, as well as many loving nephews and nieces.

Other than is parents, L.R. and Bertha Long, he is predeceased by his siblings, Reeves Long, Howard Long, Norman Long, and Helen Linton.

For everyone who was blessed to know Carl, they knew he was first and foremost a man of God.  His witness and example to others showed the love of Christ in all he did.

Carl Long made a huge difference in this world.  Many lives were impacted by his coaching, teaching, and leadership.  Carl was a humble man, never wanting accolades for anything he accomplished.

As Carl entered into the arms of God, no doubt he was told, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”
