Phyllis Marie Sullins, 89, of Overland Park, KS died July 19, 2020 at her residence.

Phyllis was born on October 11, 1930 in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia to Nellie Kerns Mitchell and Roy Byrd Ambrose.

At the age of 4, she moved with her parents to Washington, D.C. and would spend the rest of her childhood there while often returning to visit and stay with relatives in Berkeley Springs.

Phyllis was a good student and graduated from Central High School in Washington, D.C. in the Spring of 1948.  She met Russell G. Sullins (“Russ”), who was in the Navy at the time, in the Fall of 1947 at Mt. Vernon Place United Methodist Church and they were married there a year later October 30, 1948.  While in the Washington, D.C. area, Phyllis’ life included friends and relatives, work at a hospital, a CPA firm, a doctor’s office, active involvement at the Church, and the birth of her first three sons.

From Washington, the family moved first to Wichita, Kansas in 1961 and then to the Kansas City area, with the purchase of a home in Prairie Village, Kansas in 1963.  After raising their now five sons, Phyllis spent many years as a receptionist and bookkeeper in the office of an obstetrician-gynecologist, and as the office manager for the Mid-America Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons before retiring in 1990.

Phyllis and her family joined the Asbury United Methodist Church upon their move to Prairie Village in 1963.  She was very active in the Church for many years and loved teaching children.  Phyllis became a Certified Laboratory Teaching Leader for the Church providing training throughout the Kansas East and Missouri West Conferences of the Church for almost ten years.

In retirement, Phyllis and Russ owned and operated the Arrow Rock Ice Cream Emporium in Arrow Rock, Missouri for several years.  They also bought and restored a second home in the historic town.

Phyllis is survived by five sons, Michael Sullins (Betty) of Olathe, Kansas, Mark Sullins of Overland Park, Kansas, Matthew Sullins (Sydney) of Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico, Scott Sullins (Jacque) of Prosper, Texas, Shane Sullins (Kenneth Standard) of Overland Park, Kansas and had 14 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by granddaughter, Emily, and her husband of sixty-four years, Russell G. Sullins.

A memorial service is planned for Asbury United Methodist Church, Prairie Village, Kansas at a date to be determined.  Committal Service for immediate family at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas.
