
Shirley Bell McKay, 93, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away peacefully March 11, 2020.
Shirley was born in Marysville, Kansas on December 17, 1926 to John F. and Berniece Barrett. She grew up in the Kansas City area and attended Marymount High School in Salina, Kansas.
She enjoyed politics immensely. Starting in 1960 she volunteered as a Democratic Party committee woman and years later served as Johnson County Democratic Party Chairwoman. She was elected and proudly served as a Kansas State Delegate to the 1968 and 1980 Democratic National Conventions.
For over 45 years, Shirley had a successful career in Real Estate specializing in residential real estate. After her husband’s retirement she also owned and operated McKay Property Management. She was recognized for her lifelong accomplishments as noted in the 2014 Strathmore’s Who’s Who Worldwide publication.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Charles P. McKay, her sister Margie F. Barrett and grandson Jon Patrick McKay.
She is survived by her three children, Jon B. McKay (Kristie), David P. McKay (Naida) and Melinda Cutshall (Eric Sr.).
She was an adoring “MiMi” to her 8 grandchildren, Christopher M. McKay, Jon Patrick McKay, Mary Kate McKay, Peter C.Werkowitch (Deana), Megan C Ernst (Clint), Kristen A. Miller (Bobby), Eric E. Cutshall Jr, and Skylar B. Cutshall.
She was blessed with 8 loving great grandchildren, Aneisa, Ava, Petunia, Mabel, Scout, Evelyn, Lillian and Isaac.
Shirley was an advocate for the poor and those less fortunate. To honor her, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests Memorial Gifts to Little Sisters of the Poor-Kansas City or Catholic Charities.
A visitation will be held Monday, March 16, 2020 at 10:00 am with a Rosary followed by a Funeral Mass at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 9401 Mission Rd, Leawood, KS 66206. A luncheon will follow services at the church.
